Preparing for a fond high school memory

Posted

It is that time in Hewlett again. Cars are painted, school hallways are decorated and blue and white are everywhere. Homecoming will take place this Saturday, and the Bulldogs will play the Plainedge Red Devils on Hewlett’s new and improved turf field.

Homecoming is a very exciting event for students. The school week before the game is called “Spirit Week” and each day students are encouraged to dress up according to the day. Wednesday, for example, is Wacky Wednesday and another day is Pajama Day. This stimulates enthusiasm and creativity as the school gets hyped up for the upcoming game.

As fun as homecoming is, it requires much preparation. The Pep Rally, which takes place the Thursday before, is a two-period activity where all faculty and students gather in the gymnasium. Student Council and the Executive Board made the plans for it, which included holding emcee tryouts and dance team tryouts. The emcees will consist of a select group of seniors to rev up the audience while making jokes and having fun. The dance team and pep band will perform and the cheerleaders will give the school a preview of their halftime show. The school also had to get decorations and take care of the logistics. Part of Spirit Week is ‘Theme Day’ and class officers had to design and order t-shirts for their grades to wear.

The overall theme of homecoming this year is International Cities and each class chose a different theme. The freshmen are Paris; the sophomores are Mexico City; the juniors are Cairo; and the seniors are New York City.

In the past each grade has designed a float to represent their themes. This year, however, each grade will create a banner instead. After much discussion, the school administration realized that banners are more ecologically friendly, less expensive and more practical. The banners will be judged and a winner will be named. Working very hard to make their banners colorful and unique, the students are excited to display their creations.
