Lawrence Avenue scuffle ends with one officer bitten

A Queens man who was being taken into custody by two 4th Precinct police officers attacked the men and injured them during a scuffle on Lawrence Avenue in Lawrence at 7:35 p.m. on Sept. 6.

Police said that, George J. Towns, 27, of Jamaica, Queens, was walking south on Lawrence Avenue yelling and cursing frightening community members.

Two officers called to the scene arrested Towns, but as he was being put in the patrol car, he kicked and shoved the officers, according to police.

One officer suffered a sprained wrist and shoulder, a neck injury and was bitten on the hand. The other officer also suffered a sprained wrist and shoulder, and had minor injuries to his arm and leg.

Towns is charged with two counts of assault-second degree, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Sept. 7.
