Volunteers from Rebuilding Together Long Island built a wheel chair ramp and performed several home repairs at the house of Hewlett resident Beverly Kessler Erlichman in a project on May 5 sponsored by the Nassau County Bar Association.

In addition to the ramp construction, the volunteers replaced a glass panel of a hall door and a door panel of the attached garage, installed a railing on the left side of the stairs, grab bars in the tub in the upstairs bathroom and a new toilet seat in the downstairs bathroom. They repaired the kitchen ceiling and replaced a fixture, fixed a zone of the heating system, put in a stool by the bed and adjusted the front door and storm door.

Rebuilding Together Long Island, founded in 1992, is a non-profit organization that serves the elderly and disabled as well as low-income families with children, and veterans. There are 306 volunteers that perform a variety of minor repairs and major construction that includes carpentry, electrical and plumbing.

This year the group completed its 2,000th project. All the work is free, including materials. Some of the projects are funded by community organizations.
