Reflecting on a school year’s passing

While possibly difficult for some students to fathom, this school year is undeniably ending. For seniors, graduation is just around the corner, marking a turning point further away from youth and towards the adult “real-life” world.
After a journey of twists and turns through the four years of high school, the seniors are eager to move on, while also recognizing bittersweet sentiments. Many students have a few finals left to take, even though they feel like yesterday was the first day of school, first day of sports practice, first club meeting and first time meeting their teachers.
As a junior, the school year consisted of a multitude of benchmarks — the next standardized test, the next sports season, and the next academic competition. Although it may have felt as if time moved slowly, the ending came with swift excitement. Juniors have a great sense of accomplishment after completing such an important school year. In addition, seniors have a chance to reflect on their high school career as it ends.
Each year the school community awards seniors, and some younger students, for their successes at a variety of award receptions. At the annual Community Recognition Awards Night on June 2, students of exemplary character filled the auditorium. Each received awards for their service to the community and being a role model in and out of school.
On June 4, the Athletic Awards Night Dinner honored exceptional varsity and junior varsity athletes. The numerous awards given included the prestigious Athletes of the Year, an honor that represents a student’s determination to reach their potential. Band, orchestra, and chorus members were honored on June 8 at the Music Department’s Awards Night.
The upcoming summer opens several doors for Hewlett High School students. Whether looking to earn money, gain experience in a potential career field, taking part in a pre-college program, doing community service or traveling, the have opportunities are there to accomplish what they desire.
As this activity-filled school year draws to a close it brings a sense of accomplishment to many students, and possibly nostalgia for seniors. Despite the unpredictable challenges throughout a school year, many students achieved incredible things. Fortunate to be in an encouraging environment, students at Hewlett High excel in a multitude of areas. It is important to have pride for those achievements, but also excitement for even greater future endeavors.
