Funeral services held at St. Joseph’s for remains of baby found at Sanitary District 1
A funeral was held at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church in Hewlett on Saturday for the abandoned female fetus found dead on a conveyor belt at Sanitary District 1 in Lawrence on Oct. 22.
The Rev. Thomas Moriarty conducted the service. The baby was then interred at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.
A contingency of motorcycle escorts and police officers assembled at the American Legion at 3484 Park Ave. in Wantagh at 9:30 a.m., and then proceeded to the church on Broadway.
“We named her Denise and she will be laid to rest with police escorts and honor guards,” said Timothy Jaccard, founder and president of the AMT Children of Hope Foundation based in Mineola. Jaccard is a full-time paramedic for the Nassau County Police Department.
Sanitary district officials called the police at 2:21 p.m. on Oct. 22, after a fetus was found among debris at the Bay Boulevard facility. The fetus was found with the umbilical still attached.
No arrests have been made and the investigation is continuing, police said.
