Residents voted in favor of Lawrence School District to sell Number Five School to Shulamith

The polls closed at 10 p.m. sharp at Lawrence High School as the district held their referendum vote Thursday night to determine new ownership of their once Number Five School.

Residents voted in favor of the district to sell the building to Shulamith School for Girls 1605 to 142 votes.

Shulamith, a girls-only Jewish school has rented the building from the district since 2015. Lease agreements began at $500,00 per year and grew to $600,000 this school year.

The asking price for the 97,000-square-foot building is $12.5 million. According to Board of Education President Murray Forman, Shulamith was the highest bidder.
