Cedarhurst-based Rock and Wrap It Up!, an anti-poverty think tank, hosted its 34th year on Thanksgiving Day, providing a feast for at-risk communities and senior veterans in the Five Towns communities and the Rockaways.

More than 800 meals were distributed with the help of over 100 volunteers. Six hundred plates were shared with the communities of the Five Towns, and 250 prepared plates were delivered to St. John Baptist Church in Far Rockaway for locals in the Rockaways. The event took place at the Five Towns Community Center.

Michelle and Edward Schornstein donated 45 turkeys and 20 hams, while Debbie and Saul Lerner donated food and paper products. Jeffrey Schoenfeld donated kosher meals.

The Lawrence Country Club, Friendlier of Woodmere, EGP of Oceanside, Frank’s Steaks of Rockville Centre, Bobby’s BBQ, and Alegria Spanish Restaurant of Freeport cooked the food in preparation for Thursday.

The Franklin Early Childhood Center donated a pantry bag of food, and pastries donated by Costco of Lawrence. Cino’s of Oceanside and the Bagelry of Cedarhurst provided breakfast for volunteers of all ages.

Created in 1991 by Syd and Diane Mandelbaum, Rock and Wrap It Up! first gained national attention in 1994 when Kurt Loder of MTV aired a piece on the organization, eventually leading to the Rolling Stones, Nine Inch Nails, Deadhead, and others to donate.
