Rockaway Turnpike from Peninsula Boulevard to East Avenue is being repaved as part of Nassau County’s “Operation Restore Our Roadways” capital works project.
The milling and road resurfacing is expected to be completed by week’s end, weather permitting, officials said. Traffic has moved slower than usual on the high-volume road due to the work.
“Rockaway Turnpike is a main artery for our county and my administration continuously makes it a priority to restore County roadways for the safety of our residents and communities,” said County Executive Ed Mangano. “This critical road improvement project will benefit the residents that travel this road every day.”
County Legislator Howard Kopel (R-Lawrence) said that “thousands” of motorists relay on Rockaway Turnpike for their daily commutes as well as local shopping.
“It’s thrilling to see the wheels of government turning in ways that positively impact our neighbors’ quality of life while also continuing to improve our infrastructure. Rockaway Turnpike is a roadway with shared jurisdiction between Nassau County and New York City,” Kopel said.
The legislator, along with several other officials, have been speaking to city officials about synchronizing the traffic signals and improving its portion of the roadway that becomes Rockaway Boulevard into Queens.
“I’m very excited that Nassau County is upgrading their part of the thoroughfare; the ball is now in New York City’s court to follow-through with their own needed upgrades on Rockaway Boulevard,” Kopel said.
