Rockin’ and wrappin’ a Thanksgiving Day feast

Posted

Usually Cedarhurst-based Rock and Wrap It Up! is collecting unused food from events to donate to other organizations, but on Thursday last week, they held the group’s 25th annual Thanksgiving Day feast at the First Congregational Church of Rockaway.
More than 150 volunteers helped to prepare and serve 700 meals to those in need. Take out service and local free taxis was also provided. Kosher meals were available with advanced notice.
Support came from Istanbul, Friendlier Chateau restaurants and the Seawane Club as they cooked the turkeys and hams. Apple and Eve of Port Washington donated the juice. Wall’s Bakery provided cakes and pastries. Michelle and Edward Schorenstein donated all the turkey and hams. Merrill Lynch of Hewlett and Bellmore-Merrick schools donated money and volunteers. The Bagelry and Starbucks supplied breakfast for the morning volunteers.
Rock and Wrap it Up! is a food-recovery organization that works with more than 70 professional sports franchises, 160 bands and 200 schools to help collect leftover food and deliver it to soup kitchens and homeless shelters across the country.
