In the first year of the Southwest Nassau Run Series, the Five Towns Community Chest held its third annual 5K Run/Walk on Oct. 20 that wound its way around the villages of Hewlett Harbor and Hewlett Neck, starting and ending at the high school.

The run series is the Chest run along with the Malverne Run for Education, the Inwood 5K and the Lynbrook Fly with Owls 4-mile run partnering to increase awareness and participation of all four events.

Maybe a Five Towns resident will finish first at the Lynbrook run on Nov. 16, as Chris Koegel, who lives in Lynbrook won the Community Chest race in 16:56. Koegel ran as part of the Runner’s Stop team. Maura Spar was the first women to finish with a time of 23:38.

Proceeds from the event support’s Community Chest’s “Neighbor in Need” program that aids families in the Five Towns.
