Shoveling through the snow

Five Towns receives a winter blast

A foot of snow has fallen in Woodmere, with more predicted to accumulate through Saturday.

The roads in Woodmere are snow covered along the edges with a pathway cleared for traffic, which is minimal. The sidewalks are narrowly cleared, and as a result, pedestrians have opted to walk in the plowed areas of the streets so they won't get stuck walking from the streets onto the sidewalks.

One cleared area of sidewalks is the corner of Woodmere Place and Woodmere Boulevard, where Israel Hernandez, 31, of Hewlett, shoveled quickly to allow worshippers enter Congregation Aish Kodesh shul.

"I don't think this storm is better or worse than what was predicted," he said. "I think it's exactly what I'd expected."

Up the street at the Long Island Rail Road Woodmere Station, trains were arriving and departing in the morning and earely afternoon, but a systemwide shutdown is now in effect.

The Herald will continue coverage of the storm as it develops.
