Matty’s Toy Store in Hewlett was the scene for a grand Christmas shopping experience two days before the holiday for nearly 120 homeless children living in shelters throughout Nassau County on Friday.

The Nassau County Police Benevolent Association (PBA) treated the kids who ranged in age from 1 to 17 a shopping spree valued at roughly $100 per child. Kids are selected through various services, including homeless shelters, daycare centers and school districts.

Ed Conroy, of the PBA, said: “A lot of smiling faces, a lot of happy children, that’s what it’s all about.” Conroy said that while police patrol their areas looking to prevent crime, they are also aiming to build relationships community members.

New York Giants players Jay Bromley and Kerry Wynn helped the children pick toys and games from the store’s shelves and Santa Claus made a guest appearance despite his hectic schedule this time of year.

“To be involved in something this during this time of year, it makes you feel good,”

said Sean McQuade, one of the owner’s of Matty’s Toy Store owner.

“We’re so thankful that they gave us money to shop so he can pick all the toys he likes,” Denise Jolly said, who was shopping with son, Dwight, 7. Nerf guns and Legos are among his favorite toys.

Homelessness for kids has hit a new record with roughly 3,000 without a home in both Nassau and Suffolk, according to the Nassau Department of Social Services.
