Summer sounds with the Long Island Philharmonic

Enjoy music under the stars when the orchestra performs at Heckscher State Park

It used to be a summer venue for the New York Philharmonic. Now the Long Island Philharmonic has taken over stage at Heckscher Park to present the Islip Arts Council’s annual free concert, a summertime ritual for music lovers.
The Long Island Philharmonic, under the baton of David Stewart Wiley, is ready for a grand evening of music-making on Saturday. "We are very excited to be the resident orchestra for the free parks concert," said Stephen Belth, the Philharmonic's executive director. "We would especially like to thank David Lerner Associates and Capital One Bank for their generous sponsorship of the concert."
Maestro Wiley, music director and conductor, leads the orchestra in a program of American classics. The program features selections from beloved American composers, including “West Side Story,” Victory at Sea, Satchmo! A Tribute to Louis Armstrong, 76 Trombones from “The Music Man,” and Tchaikovsky, as well as works from Long Island composers Billy Joel, George M. Cohan, Reynard Burns, Morton Gould, and others.
Following the concert’s rousing finale, Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, a magical display of fireworks will light up the night sky.
As always, concertgoers are urged to arrive early to this popular event. Many visitors bring family and friends for picnicking throughout the day. Everyone is urged to bring a non-perishable food item for donation to Long Island Cares. Admission is free. There is a $10 vehicle use fee in effect until 5 p.m.; after 5 p.m. a $10 donation is requested.

The orchestra continues its outdoor concertizing next month, with a concert scheduled for Aug. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre in Eisenhower Park, and the following night, Aug. 14, at 8:30 p.m., at Heckscher Park's Chapin Rainbow Stage in Huntington.
