The treat here is helping J.T.’s son

On Oct. 29, Lawrence High School held its annual Safe Trick-or-Treat event that was begun by the school’s National Honor Society chapter in memory of our beloved security guard, J.T., who passed away about two years ago.
It was always a dream of his for his son to be able to college. Proceeds from the event support a scholarship fund was started for J.T.’s son.
On Safe Trick-or-Treat, children of all ages and their families to go from classroom to classroom in the high school, participating in fun events and collecting candy. Various clubs set up classrooms and decorate them according to a theme that they choose.
Students, teachers and visitors dress up in costume for a night of fun. National Honor Society’s room, where I was, had Disney’s “Frozen” as its theme. We had the little kids “build a snowman” with marshmallows, pretzel sticks, chocolate chips, and candy corn for the nose. We even set up a sing-along station in the corner so our guests could sing songs from the movie.
I could pretend that it was the little kids who sweetly sang along, but in reality it was us high school students singing at the top of their lungs to tunes such as “Let It Go” and “For the First Time in Forever.” It was the greatest thing I’ve ever seen.

The trick-or-treaters were utterly adorable and it was amazing to watch their faces light up as they came in. We had Elsas, Spider-Mans, cowgirls and knights, etc. I myself went as a ‘50s girl.
The one thing I love about Halloween activities is the fact that you’re never too old to put on a costume and celebrate. With all the excitement going on around us, it was hard to stay in one room and not go exploring. I traveled around to each room, admiring the decorations and wishing I could participate in everything. The highlight of my night was in the face-painting room, when one of my friends asked specifically for Batman makeup, only to be painted as a butterfly instead by some of his friends.
The event was a complete success. It was a fun night for everyone. Over one 100 families came; it was the biggest turnout so far. The best part about this event is that it’s so much bigger than just a night of Halloween activities; it serves an amazing purpose.
Everyone loved J.T. and praised him for his kindness, friendliness, and sense of humor. This event is the perfect thing to represent him and keep his memory alive. Lawrence has always been a family and this event proves that is true.
