Tiger spirits were pumped at Homecoming

Posted

Lawrence Woodmere Academy celebrated its 107th year with another beautiful Homecoming week. Homecoming is a time where all come together to build up school and community spirit.

LWA festivities began with Spirit Week, where the entire school dressed up in themed-costumes. Tuesday started the week with Pajama Day, a pure classic. This was followed by Sports Jersey Day on Wednesday, with an abundance of different sports and colors crossing each other in the hallways. Thursday was Decade Day and consisted of many throwbacks. Friday followed tradition by being Blue and White Day, the colors of the school.

Decked out in blue and white, students attended the Tigers Pep Rally in the gymnasium, where the entire student body cheered on the middle school soccer team, the girls’ varsity volleyball team and the boys’ varsity soccer squad as they ran through the gym giving younger kids high fives.

Friday evening continued the LWA spirit as the school presented the Faculty Show. This show is always a true delight. Faculty members dedicated their acts and the show to the memory of Barbra Barth Feldman, beloved headmaster of Lawrence Woodmere Academy. She died in August. Throughout the evening, faculty members unleashed their hidden theatrical talents to the LWA community. Hessel Hall was filled with awe and laughter as students got to see teachers perform.

The highlight of Homecoming week took place on Saturday. The weather set up a magnificently beautiful autumn day. Tunes were carried out by DJ Cha Chi (Christian Aristizabal, class of 2020) as he set the tone by spinning records and keeping the crowd roaring.

The younger groups of children were able to do a lot, ranging from rides on the choo-choo train across the soccer field to sand art and bouncy houses. Upper school students ran the carnival booth for their grades. Freshman were killing it with carnival games, and sophomores took some amazing-crazy pictures for all at the photo booth. Juniors turned the cotton candy machine until their hands fell off as the seniors were able to capture memories as families and faculty signed their class picture.

The Lawrence Woodmere Academy students played the faculty in a thrilling soccer game that the students won 4-3. Many then watched the main event as the varsity boys hosted the Staten Island Academy for a competitive, friendly scrimmage. It was a physical and close game: the Tigers were edged out 1-0 as both teams played extremely well. LWA will face Waldorf in the playoffs as they both fight for their ticket to the championship.

The very active LWA Parents’ Association displayed an assortment of international food that seemed like a food expo. Cuisines from across the globe were represented and enjoyed by all. Homecoming ended on Saturday evening as LWA welcomed back alumni at a reception in the beautiful library mezzanine. Don’t miss out next year — come to Homecoming 2020!
