Tornadoes rip through Hewlett

Last Saturday was Homecoming at Hewlett, but Lawrence senior quarterback John Kinder and a punishing ground attack stole the spotlight and dominated the second half of a 52-22 Conference III victory before a standing-room only crowd.

Kinder rushed for 176 yards and five touchdowns and went 4-for-4 passing in the final minute of the first half to set up senior Marcus Pinto’s 32-yard field goal that put the Golden Tornadoes (2-1) ahead to stay. They outscored the Bulldogs (1-2) 28-0 in the second half, highlighted by a 99-yard touchdown drive in the third quarter.

“We made a statement to a lot of people that we’re back,” said Lawrence senior center Michael Stanya, who helped pave the way for Kinder, senior Kenny Barnett (188 yards, one touchdown) and sophomore Ryan Fredericks (136) to combine for a whopping 500 rushing yards. “We took a one-week vacation,” Stanya added. “Now we’re back.”

Nine days after allowing 49 points over the last three quarters of a home loss to Lynbrook, the Golden Tornadoes’ defense came up with three takeaways and three sacks and pitched a shutout in the second half. Senior linebackers John Cossack (eight tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery) and Joel Santisteban (eight tackles) led the unit. “We made a few adjustments on defense and everyone came to play,” Lawrence coach Lou Andre said. “We settled down after the half and did a lot of good things. I’m very pleased with the effort on both sides of the ball.”

The first half had a little bit of everything. Hewlett opened with an impressive 72-yard drive, capped by sophomore Justin Fyne’s 13-yard touchdown run, and got a pair of jolts from speedy senior Jason Canales in the second quarter after the Golden Tornadoes took a 14-7 lead. Canales caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Alex Kahn to tie it, and he answered Kinder’s third score of the day with a 66-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Bulldogs moved in front 22-21 after Kahn’s two-point conversion run.
