Tropical Storm Elsa hits the Five Towns

A flash food warning is in effect for all of Nassau Count until noon today, when Tropical Storm Elsa is forecasted to blow across the region, bringing with it high winds and steady rain, according to the National Weather Service.

One to three inches of rain, with strong wind gusts are possible. The storm is expected to taper off Friday afternoon, with a 30 percent chance of rain Saturday evening, the NWS said.

Along with the storm, a truck struck a utility pole on Rockaway Turnpike by Burger King on Friday morning that caused the pole to fell into the roadway. The traffic shut down it caused  for a few hours is now over and traffic is open in bth directions,

In and around the Five Towns, the storm  caused little trouble, according to village officials.

In Atlantic Beach, Mayor George Pappas said there is little or no flooding and noted that the previously completed Ocean Boulevard roadway project has helped tremendously in mitigating flooding.

Cedarhurst Mayor Benjamin Weinstock said there has been little and much less “ponding,” when puddles become larger-sized areas of water as reporter by the  village’s Department of Public Works. Weinstock said the check valves are working.

Drains and roads are clear in Lawrence, Village Administrator Ron Goldman said and staff is “geared up” for the storm.

A couple of trees cane down and were taken care of in Woodsburgh, Mayor Lee Israel said and as of 9:15 a.m., “everything seems to be OK,” he said.
