Two challenged races for Lawrence BOE seats

There will be at least one, if not two new Lawrence Board of Education (BOE) members as Trustee Uri Kaufman will not run for a fourth term and incumbent Trustee Abel Feldhamer is being challenged by Matthew Russo.

“After nine years it is time to move on and give someone else a chance,” Kaufman said.

Voting for board candidates and on the school budget is set for May 19. All terms are for three years.

Feldhamer vs. Russo

Feldhamer, 37, is a lawyer who lives in Cedarhurst and is running for his third term on the board.

He said he is proud of an “excellent team” of administrators and what the trustees have achieves in the past several years. “I look forward to the opportunity to continue building on these accomplishments, to help ensure that all of the children in the Lawrence School District will continue to receive the best educational opportunities in the coming years.”

Enhancing the academic offerings, improving the way the district incorporates technology and innovation in all the services it provides and completing the “comprehensive” capital improvements plan are Feldhamer’s priorities if re-elected. “So that all of our buildings and facilities are state-of-the-art and provide the optimal learning environment and the best opportunities for our students.”

A first-time candidate, Russo, 41, is a Nassau County Civil Service employee who also owns an event services/amusements company. He lives in Woodmere.
