In honor of the veterans’ service, the Village of Cedarhurst in partnership with the Lawrence-Cedarhurst American Legion Post 339, hosted a ceremony on Veterans Day at 11:11 a.m. at Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park on Nov. 11. The day, date and exact time marks the end of World War I. The day was first known as Armistice Day, then years later, expanded to include veterans of all wars.

This year’s Veterans Day event was dedicated to John McCabe, William “Bill” Murphy and Maurice Sullivan, the veterans of Post 339 who died within the last year and expressed gratitude towards veterans of past wars and those still serving.

The Pledge of Allegiance led by Post 339 Vice Commander Al Landi kicked off the ceremony, and followed by Lawrence High School student Noemi Viola, who sang the National Anthem.

Recognizing both living and deceased veterans, Cedarhurst Mayor Benjamin Weinstock said that Veterans Day is a “day of celebration and honor,” noting that the flag does not fly at half-mast on Nov. 11.

“What has always made our country exceptional are the patriots who generation after generation dedicate themselves to building our nation that’s stronger, has more freedom and is more perfect each and every day,” Weinstock said.
