Village to allow ice skating

The amateur hockey team from Mystery, Alaska is most likely not coming to play the New York Rangers in Lawrence, but the village will now allow ice skating on the pond at the Lawrence Yacht & Country Club.

Lawrence trustees voted unanimously — 5-0 — to approve the measure put forth by Trustee Uri Kaufman at the Nov. 10 board meeting. Kaufman made adding this as a recreational amenity part of his platform when he ran for the trustee position in June.

The 30,000-square-foot pond that is barely three-feet deep, is near the driving range and hole 8 of the golf course. When the ice is five inches thick, which Kaufman said is reasonable for the shallow pond when the weather remains cold, ice skating will be permitted.

“We got the rules out of an insurance manual, this is well-trodden territory,” Kaufman said. “We should be able to get two or three weeks out of the winter for this.”

Dick Button, Peggy Fleming nor Sarah Hughes are headed to Lawrence, but residents and non-residents can use the frozen pond. “What needs to be set down are certain rules and regulations, such as not skating at night,” said Trustee Daniel Goldstein.

Village officials said hours and rules would be posted in the near future.

Illuminated house lights

Board members discussed passing a village ordinance that would require residents to illuminate house numbers. Trustee Michael Fragin believes this is “good for safety” and is something the volunteer ambulance corps Hatzalah has been requesting. A vote will be taken at a future meeting following comments from the Nassau County Planning Commission.

Doughty Boulevard issues

Day laborers hanging out well past the time they should have found work is a problem for some Doughty Boulevard residents, once again. The issue first came to light late last year and was hopefully solved by the village erecting a fence by its parking lot. “It’s a serious problem, I’m sympathetic to the problem,” said Mayor Alex Edelman.

Village trustees said they would look into the issue as well as the drag racing that appears to be occurring as well as the illegal parking near the Seasons Express on Doughty Boulevard.
