Oceanside dazzles again

OCEANSIDE 48, EAST MEADOW 7

And then there was one.

Oceanside wowed a standing-room-only Homecoming crowd with another spectacular offensive display and emerged from Saturday’s showdown with East Meadow as the lone unbeaten team in Nassau Conference I.

Quarterback Tyler Heuer threw six touchdown passes, including a pair to Gene Garay, and defensive back Joe Swanson had two interceptions, a sack and forced fumble, leading the Sailors to a convincing 48-7 victory.

Heuer had scoring tosses of 44, 8, 58, 8, 38 and 22 yards, and Nick Sherry had a 1-yard touchdown run following Swanson’s second interception.

“My receivers made me look good,” said Heuer, who has 15 touchdown passes in four games. “They’re dangerous in the open field. Our line did a great job against the blitz. They were bigger than us up front, but our guys held their own.”

The Jets avoided the shutout late in the fourth quarter when Jeff Zea scored on an 8-yard run.

WEST HEMPSTEAD 41, V.S. SOUTH 20

After losing 17 straight, the Rams have themselves a winning streak.

West Hempstead spoiled Homecoming at Valley Stream South by scoring 28 unanswered points in the second half to earn a 41-20 Conference III victory.

Tayvon Hall, who had three touchdowns in last week's win over Great Neck North, burned the Falcons for 196 yards and four touchdowns. Kyle Garrett and Justin Boatwright added scores for the Rams, who trailed by a touchdown at the half. South quarterback Thomas Meaney had a rushing touchdown and connected with Marco Sammerone on a 53-yard passing score.

EAST ROCKAWAY 40, CLARKE 27

Senior Michael Castellano rushed for a career-high 241 yards on 27 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead East Rockaway to a convincing 40-27 victory over host Clarke on Homecoming Day.

The Rocks amassed 373 yards on the ground. Junior Chris Puchalski had an 86-yard kickoff return for a touchdown for the Rams. East Rockaway improved to 3-1 in Conference IV, while Clarke fell to 2-2.

Things looked dicey for the Rocks when starting quarterback Andrew Bashford went down with an ankle injury during their first drive of the game. Junior Sean Bohan came on and proved to be more than capable by rushing for two scores and throwing for another in his varsity debut. Junior fullback Anthony Tesoriero scored twice for East Rockaway. Juniors Michael Lores and Nick Ulip, and senior Jamie Parzych were outstanding on defense.
