The Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway Middle School on Frost Lane in Lawrence held its 10th annual blood drive on Feb. 15. The drive yielded 47 pints of blood collected from 55 donors, including seven HAFTR staff members highlighted by a donation from Principal Rochelle Brand.
School nurse Claudia Hanson coordinated the six-hour event with Long Island Blood Services/New York Blood Services. Prior to the blood drive sixth-grade students learned about blood during their science class.
In addition, the students learned about the role of bone marrow in producing millions of new red blood cells every minute and that only 2 percent of the nation’s population regularly donates blood.
