Winning hoops, Sports Night elevates student spirit

The last few weeks at Hewlett High School have been filled with exciting school spirit for all students. From basketball games to this week’s Sports Night, many have been excitedly showcasing their Hewlett spirit.

When the last bell of the school day rang on Feb. 17, February vacation had finally begun. While the students at Hewlett High were excited to begin their anticipated break, they did not rush to leave the school halls. Instead, they packed into the gymnasium to watch the boys’ varsity basketball team take on Locust Valley in the first playoff game of the season. The spirit was high in the gym as students sported their Hewlett apparel to cheer on their victorious team.

And the spirit was even higher the following Thursday, when the boys continued their playoff run against Roosevelt. Many students and community members filled the stands to once again support their team. The intensity was elevated as the score was tight. In the end, the Hewlett fans cheered as the boys clinched the win with a one-point win to advance to the Nassau County semifinals at Hofstra University. Students are looking forward to cheering on the boys once again on March 1.

The basketball game will not be the only place that Hewlett students will showcase their school spirit this week. This week is Spirit Week in Hewlett High to get ready for Friday’s Sports Night.

Throughout the week, students and teachers will be participating in special- themed days: ‘Merica Monday, Pajama Day Tuesday, Workout Wednesday, Blackout Day Thursday (Seniors wear neon) and Theme Day Friday, in which each class represents their Sports Night theme. This year, the themes are seasons, seniors are summer, juniors are winter, sophomores are fall and freshmen are spring.

On Friday night, the four classes will come together to compete in the annual Sports Night. Students take part in volleyball, hockey and basketball games as well as a dance competition, an under-over relay and an academic bowl. It is a night that is highly anticipated by all classes. It is planned by the Student Council.

The dance teams have been practicing for weeks, hoping to reign victorious for their specific grades. It is an especially significant night for us seniors, who will participate in our last Sports Night. Since freshmen year, we have been looking up to the seniors at Sports Night, dressed in all black with incredible spirit. This year, it is our turn to lead the school in one of the best nights in the year.
