Stephen B. Witt, of Woodmere, was reappointed as president of the Nassau BOCES Board during the agency’s July organizational meeting on July 25. Witt, who is serving his third term as president, was reelected to the one-year term on the board in April.

“I am honored that my fellow board members have once again trusted me with this responsibility,” Witt said. “This year, Nassau BOCES is celebrating its 45th anniversary, and we are looking forward to continuing to address the challenges facing public education, develop programs that ensure student success and accelerate momentum on critical issues.”

Witt and his fellow Nassau BOCES trustees received statewide recognition for their ongoing legislative advocacy efforts on behalf of the 56 school districts in the county earlier this year. The board was presented with the inaugural Board Advocacy Award from the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) during its annual State Issues Conference.

Also a leader in his local school district, Witt has served on the Hewlett-Woodmere School District board since July 2003 and is currently its vice president. He had previously served on that board from 1984 to 1996.

Other Nassau BOCES’ officers sworn in at the organizational meeting were Vice President Eric B. Schultz, District Clerk Susan Bergtraum and Vice District Clerk Michael Weinick. Witt, Schultz and trustee Deborah Coates were all reelected to the board this year by their local school boards.

Established in 1967, the Board of Cooperative Educational Services of Nassau County (Nassau BOCES) is a public agency that serves the 300 schools and 225,000 students in the 56 local school districts of Nassau County, and creates, develops and implements those programs and services that would otherwise be too costly for individual school districts. Taxpayers maintain control of their local school boards, while savings are realized by purchasing equipment and services through a large cooperative.
