Dozens of local residents, including several county legislators, rallied on Jan. 31 at 2 p.m., at the 5th Precinct in Elmont, against a plan by County Executive Ed Mangano to transform four of Nassau County’s eight police precincts, including the Fifth Precinct in Elmont, into Community Policing Centers. Mangano said the plan, which was announced on Jan. 30, is expected to save the county $20 million annually. more

Nassau County Police are warning young people to be on the lookout for a white van after three teens were approached in separate incidents by the driver over the past week in the North Merrick-North Bellmore and East Meadow areas. The teens were asked whether they wanted a ride. The teens ran home and informed their parents, who called police. Authorities said the teens did the right thing by running away and letting police know. more

Closing two of the county’s eight police precincts, Grilli-Robles says, will have little effect on policing in the county — especially now that the Police Department and its vehicles are equipped with modern technology, and officers and residents are using station houses less — but it will save about $15 million. more
