UPDATE: Residents were startled at the sudden flash of lightning and clap of thunder shortly before 8 p.m. on Tuesday when round two of the today's storm announced itself, bringing with it sleet and wind. Residents woke up to more than a foot of snow. the National Weather Service reports an average of 13.3 inches of snow fell on Long Island. Public school in our area are closed. Nassau Community College announced a late start for 1 p.m. Officials advise people to only travel in an emergency. Kennedy airport was closed Thursday morning, but will reopen later. more
The National Weather Service has issued a storm watch for our area for late Tuesday through Wednesday afternoon. Snow is predicted to be heavy at times, with accumulations of six to 12 inches. Locally higher amounts are possible. Winds gusts can hit 25 TO 35 MPH, and visibility will be under a quarter mile at times. Travel will be hazardous from Tuesday night through the daytime Wednesday. more
