Nassau County police revealed Monday that a Franklin Square man was killed in a hit-and-run accident at the corner of Commonwealth Street and Naple Avenue while riding his motorcycle without a helmet Sunday morning. Police are seeking the public’s help in locating the driver of the vehicle that struck John Deiker, of Franklin Square, Sunday at 11:45 a.m.

A rainy Saturday in November didn’t seem like the kind of day that would bring out volunteers for charity, but despite chilly temperatures and a threatening storm last weekend, the site of a local Habitat For Humanity house on Louis Avenue in Elmont drew volunteers from all over the area, who helped make sure a home-in-progress had all four walls before the day was over.

Saul Lerner, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District athletic director, recently resigned his post as coordinator of the Nassau County Boys' Basketball Committee because, he said, the Section VIII Athletic Council rejected a proposal of his to fine-tune the seeding process that ultimately determines teams' playing schedules.
In 2006, Lerner was the architect of an ability-grouping system that determined a team's conference by its record. Previously, teams were assigned to conferences without much regard to their records. Rather, officials used what they called the "snake," in which teams were seeded and then laid out on a grid that wound back and forth in serpentine fashion.
