19th annual SIDMUN competition was exhilarating

This year’s SIDMUN event was my first; I became a member of the Model United Nations program in September, and I’ve valued and loved every second of the program ever since.

Model UN gives me more than most other clubs do; I’ve gained invaluable experience and knowledge, and had the opportunity to network with dozens of other students.

The annual Model UN competition is more than just a debate, or a “battle of nerdy students” — it’s like a class, but more diverse and enjoyable.

On April 21, I represented the country of South Africa in the General Assembly’s Legal Committee at Floral Park Memorial High School. My partner Allen and I were both fairly experienced in Model UN, and we were prepared to go in and fiercely debate about the topic: Internet Censorship. We had handed our position paper in a while ago, and were reading articles and academic journals in the days leading up to the conference.

The event was exhilarating. It’s difficult to explain. You can really only understand it through experience; by standing in a committee room, watching and participating.

I was impressed by the effort and heated debate my fellow delegates put forth during the eight-hour event. Everything characteristic of a conference was present: scumming, dirty play, tension and — yes — fun. Out of about 45 delegates participating in the competition, Allen and I were among the few students that were contenders for an award. I put forth everything I could: a plethora of skills, tricks and information. We didn’t win an award, unfortunately, but I wasn’t upset. I had a great time.

My advice to anyone who is contemplating competing in Model UN is to persevere and remain determined, since it can be a grueling event, and be prepared to work with others.

I plan on using the skills I’ve acquired through Model UN in every facet of my life from this point on, and I’d recommend the program to any student looking to expand their knowledge of international policy — an edge that would complement any career goal.
