The people taking it to the streets against climate change

Posted

Nassau County Legislator Laura Curran, a Democrat from Baldwin who represents part of Merrick, and Bob Young, an environmental activist from Merrick, are among the local organizers preparing for the People’s Climate March on Sunday, Sept. 21, starting at 11:30 a.m. at Columbus Circle in Manhattan.

The march is intended to send a signal to world leaders that Americans care about the issue of climate change ahead of the United Nations Climate Summit at U.N. headquarters in New York on Sept. 23. Environmental activists contend that climate change, or global warming, is caused by industrial pollutants such as carbon dioxide and methane. They are seeking stringent caps on such emissions to slow and potentially halt climate change.

More than 120 world leaders are expected to attend the climate summit. Tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, will be at the march, Young said. To join Nassau County’s contingent, email nassaucountypeoplesmarch@gmail.com.
