Standing in front of the swimming pool at Veterans Memorial Park in East Meadow, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, joined by Councilman Gary Hudes, announced the opening of 15 cooling centers throughout the township.

• East Atlantic Beach

• Atlantic Beach Estates

• Point Lookout Civic Beach

Murray also provided tips to residents for staying cool during the heat wave, including the use of sunscreen, staying indoors and avoiding strenuous activity during the middle of the day, remaining hydrated, wearing loose-fitting clothes, and to avoid leaving children or pets in closed vehicles. "At the end of the day, just think of common sense ways to keep cool and stay safe,” she said.

Hudes, who represents East Meadow, pointed to the residents who were spending the hot summer day in the cool water, and urged others to follow their lead. “The health and welfare of our residents is in the utmost of our mind,” he said.
