We can't let Democrats take over the State Senate

Believe it or not, legislation has been submitted that would permit illegal aliens to vote in New York state. Bronx Sen. Gustavo Rivera has introduced a bill in the State Senate that would permit non-citizens and illegal immigrants to vote in state races. While something like this would have seemed impossible a decade ago, it’s now a real possibility if the Democrats take control of the State Senate.

Rivera’s bill would permit illegal aliens to vote in all local and state elections, though they would be barred by federal law from voting in congressional and presidential elections. I hope voters won’t be duped into complacency and return Senate Democrats to power. This is just a sign of things to come if they are successful in winning back the majority.

Not surprisingly, the so-called Progressives turned out in large numbers in last Tuesday’s primary. Governor Andrew Cuomo easily defeated his ultra-liberal opponent, Zephyr Teachout, but because of the disproportionate number of liberal activists who turned out, he received only 65 percent of the vote. Most Democrats were rather complacent, while the left wing of the party also had a significant turnout.

The primary reminded me of when Lt. Gov. Mary Anne Krupsak ran against Gov. Hugh Carey in the 1974 Democratic primary. Just like Carey, our current governor has done everything he can to save our state from financial ruin, and was pitted against a nominee who had the support of the extreme left wing and organized labor.

The ultra-liberal wing is more than a thorn in the side of the Democratic Party, just as the Tea Party is to Republicans.

Unfortunately, a number of special-interest groups put their support behind candidates attacking Cuomo’s tough stance on pension reform and his spending cap. However, it is important for voters to remember that it is Cuomo’s tough stances on these issues that have turned New York from a complete embarrassment, heading toward bankruptcy, into a more prudent government.
