Carey, 3-0, on the rise

Coming off an injury-riddled, one-win season, Carey has nowhere to go but up on the boys’ soccer pitch. If the opening week of the season is any indication of what the future holds, the Seahawks appear to be on the right track.

Junior Elvis Aguiliz scored the only goal of the match off a brilliant feed from senior captain Teddy Matozzo in the fourth minute to give Carey (3-0 overall, 2-0 Conference AA-III) a 1-0 victory over visiting Long Beach Sept. 15. The Seahawks registered the shutout despite playing a man down for the final 65 minutes.

Matt Princi, in his sixth year as head coach, is happy with what he has seen thus far. “Last year, everything that could possibly go wrong, went wrong,” Princi said. “Overall, I’m very happy with this group. The chemistry is good. Last year, we would have not been able to pull off a win being down a man. There’s a lot of talent and heart.”

Junior goalkeeper Brian Morgan, who had seven saves to register his first career shutout in the win over Long Beach, mans the net. Morgan works well with the experienced, talented defensive unit. Senior captain Scott Liuzzo is the backbone of the defense. Liuzzo, who worked tirelessly in the offseason to organize workouts and conditioning sessions, has speed, strength and plenty of skill.

Fellow senior Vincent Cali provides athleticism and speed, and has the versatility to get the counter attack started from his outside left position. Junior Chris Mrozko is a terrific complement to Cali at outside right. Hard-nosed senior Mike Jarosch, who doesn’t back down to any challenge, gives Carey size and strength in the back.

Young talent is aplenty at midfield. Jeff Castaneda, who was instrumental in the win over Long Beach, and Dylan Demeo are up-and-comers expecting to make big contributions. Ryan Mehr and Eric Zaccharias are both solid players off to a fine start. Castaneda, Demeo, Mehr, and Zaccharias are all sophomores.

Senior Julio Herrera and junior Gianfranco Iacono are both skilled, physical midfielders. Princi will need this group to control play in his 4-5-1 formation. Sophomores Filipe David and Leonardo Landetta will also contribute.
