Carey inches closer to playoffs

A blast off the foot of senior center-midfielder Chris Martelli with 11:08 remaining gave visiting Carey a 1-1 tie with Kennedy in a Conference AA-II boys’ soccer game on Oct. 14.

Martelli’s goal, which came off a direct kick from 30 yards out and sailed into the upper left corner, was only the third allowed by the Cougars (8-0-2) all season. It earned the Seahawks (6-2-2) an important point in their quest for a return trip to the playoffs, which begin Oct. 31.

“There’s nothing wrong with coming back to get a tie on the road against an undefeated team,” Carey coach Matt Princi said. “The kids kept battling after we fell behind early and I thought we had the better of the play in the last 20 minutes.
“We had a couple of ties earlier in the year that should’ve been wins,” he added. “This one feels better.”

Kennedy’s offense struck 4:58 into the game when senior Jared Lerman banged home a rebound inside the box for his fourth goal of the season. It came after Carey keeper Karmvir Singh made two of his six saves.

Singh, who was Honorable Mention All-County a year ago, kept the Cougars off the scoreboard for 75 minutes thereafter. He has 59 saves and five shutouts on the year. “Karmvir has been getting steady work,” Princi said. “He has great reflexes. He made an incredible save at the end of the Great Neck South game to keep it tied.”

Senior outside backs Michael Marino and Giancarlo Arotinco are leading the defense in front of Singh, and the Seahawks have six players with at least three goals. Versatile junior Kyle DeMeo leads the team in goals with four, the latest of which gave Carey a 1-0 victory over Freeport on Oct. 9. “Kyle’s a workhorse all over the field,” Princi said.
