Chinese New Year is stuffed with fun in Elmont

Teenagers got the opportunity to make their own dumplings for the Chinese New Year at the Elmont Memorial Library on Jan. 23.

The holiday fell on Jan. 25 this year, and marks the end of the coldest winter days, according to ChineseNewYear.net. It was originally a ceremonial day to pray to gods for a good planting and harvest season, and, according to legend, commemorates the day a boy used firecrackers to fight off a monster named Nian.

Children traditionally receive money in red envelopes for the holiday, and observers are encouraged to eat dumplings for every meal.
