Students from Elmont’s Clara H. Carlson School celebrated Veterans Day with an assembly on Nov. 8.

Local veterans were invited to join the assembly with students in third, fourth, fifth and sixth grade.

Students Logan Corchado and Carlton Stewart, members of the school’s Color Guard, each held an American flag to start the ceremony. They were followed in by third graders as they walked to the tune of “Grand Old Flag.” Sixth grader Danieda Paul sang “The Star Spangled Banner.”

All assembly attendees were welcome by Stacia Walfall, principal, Melissa Polzella, assistant principal, and Richard Mansfield, assistant principal.

The school’s third grade classes all performed a military medley and “Fifty Nifty States United States” songs. Haider Imran, sixth grader, and Jane Dragovich, school counselor, each read a poem aloud. Imran read “The Best on Earth” to the assembly and Dragovich read “Don’t Quit.”

A video montage, which included photos of military members in the local community and family members of staff and students, was played for the audience.

The third grade classes concluded the assembly with readings and a performance of “Grand Old Flag.”
