Experienced Seahawks seek big things

It was former NFL head coach Bum Phillips who made mention of knocking on the door one season, beating on it the next, and finally kicking it down when the team had matured into a legitimate title contender.

After compiling a 6-3-5 record and winning a first-round playoff game in 2008, that’s the attitude the Carey is taking to the soccer field. With 16 seniors, many who are playing their third season on varsity, the Seahawks are expecting to make noise in Conference AA-II.

Matt Princi, in his fourth year as head coach, has high hopes for the team. “I have been looking forward to this season for quite some time,” Princi said. “Last season we had a bunch of low-scoring games that ended up tied. This year, with a more experienced lineup, hopefully we can turn the ties into wins.”

Carey returns a defensive unit which should be among the strongest in the conference. Senior sweeper Enthony Barba, a third-year varsity player, is a multitalented performer who has a mix of speed and agility. On the right side of the defense is senior Mike Marino, an outstanding athlete who is tough to beat and has great skill with the ball.

Senior marker Steven Matthew rounds out a solid group. Matthew, the defending county champion in both the 100- and 200-meter dash, is a tremendous athlete who can chase down anyone. Princi believes the defense will be a major strength. “We didn’t give up many goals a year ago,” he said. “Having these guys back for another year, along with the goalie, we should be very strong on defense.”

Senior goalkeeper Karmvir Singh, an All-County honorable mention recipient in 2008, has terrific reflexes and a reputation for making clutch saves. Senior Tim Maracic will also see time in the net.
