12 to 24 inches may hit Long Island

It was not a white Christmas, but snow — lots of it — will fill the day after, and Monday too.

The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a Blizzard Warning for Nassau County. It is in effect from Sunday at 6 a.m. until Monday at 6 p.m.

Snow accumulations of between 11 and 16 inches were predicted as of Sunday morning, but those totals were upped to a foot to two feet by Sunday night. Forecasters said there will be strong, gusty winds and low visibility. "Thundersnows" were predicted, the snowy version of thunder and lightning.

In a statement released on Saturday, National Weather Service advises residents to take safety precautions during the blizzard:

"A blizzard warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout conditions, making travel extremely dangerous. Do not travel. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle."

Virtually every official and forecaster were telling residents to just stay home.
