Going bald for a good cause

Elmont Boy Scout Troop 294 raises money for cancer patients through St. Baldrick's Foundation

Local Boy Scout Troop 294 wrapped up a month-long fundraiser for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation — a volunteer-driven charity that funds more childhood cancer research grants than any volunteer organization — on March 11, at Lily Flanagans in Islip.

Every Scout of Troop 294, as well as troop leaders, had their heads shaved during the event, in exchange for donations from the community. The troop raised $2,750, exceeding its goal of $2,500, and was named the top-earning team, according to the St. Baldrick’s web site.

“All you have to do is look at one of the cancer sickened children walking around with no hair because of chemo-therapy and remember that you are healthy and your hair will grow back,” Troop 294 Scoutmaster David Goldblum wrote to parents and troop members, prior to the event.

Donations can still be made to St. Baldrick's, through Troop 294, at https://www.stbaldricks.org/teams/mypage/75204/2012.
