Lady Seahawks seek strong finish

Despite a promising start to the 2009-10 campaign, the season has been mostly disappointing for Carey coach Theresa Schmidt and the Lady Seahawks.

Carey came into the season with high hopes after a third place finish in conference play a year ago, but a lack of cohesiveness, especially on the offensive end, made the going tough. After a 49-41 loss to Valley Stream Central last Friday, Carey’s fifth straight defeat, the Lady Seahawks fell to 2-7 in Conference AA-III. Junior guard Nicolette Sands led them with 12 points.

Schmidt was hoping for better results. “We just haven’t jelled as a team the way I thought we would,” she said. “We knew coming in that we would be undersized, and we would have to score from the perimeter. We haven’t shot the ball well.
“We have to get better at using teammates to get better looks at the basket,” she added. “We haven’t been working as a team. There are three games left to prove what we can do, and then we need to work hard in the offseason.”

One real positive for Carey has been the play of Liz Osowiecki. The sophomore forward has improved a great deal on both ends of the floor. Osowiecki scored a career-high 18 points in an early season 55-51 upset of perennial power Hicksville. The loss is Hicksville’s only defeat of the year. Osowiecki has also been impressive on the boards, pulling down double figures in rebounds on multiple occasions.

Sands leads the team with an average just under 12 points per game. Sands, who was an All-Conference selection as a sophomore, was sensational in the win over Hicksville. The junior guard’s three-pointer late in the fourth quarter broke a tie and gave the Lady Seahawks a lead they would not relinquish. Sands finished with a game-high 20 points, six assists and five rebounds. She also hit for a season-high 22 points in a loss to Long Beach.

While her name isn’t featured in the boxscore, senior Kerry Gilroy has done a solid job on the defensive end, often matching up with the opponent’s top scoring threat. Schmidt also had praise for play of Courtney Norell. The senior forward scored a season-high 13 points in a 57-54 victory over Valley Stream North earlier in the season. She also scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds in the win over Hicksville.

With the season winding down, Schmidt is hopeful the team can finish strong. “The girls are working hard and keeping their heads up,” Schmidt said. “The defense has kept us in nearly every game; we just haven’t been able to find consistent scoring. The girls are tired of losing. They would love to play well in the last three games and finish up strong.”

Carey concludes the season at home when Hempstead visits on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
