The Nassau Council of Chambers’ annual Businessperson of the Year Award ceremony was held on Oct. 7, at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. Maria Caliendo, owner and operator of Prince Umberto’s Pizzeria Restaurant — a Franklin Square business since 1976 — was named the Franklin Square Chamber of Commerce’a Businessperson of the Year. Caliendo was born in the U.S., but attended high school in Italy, and after working for the U.S. embassy in Italy for a few years, she returned to Franklin Square in 1995 to help her family run Prince Umberto’s. She has served on the Franklin Square chamber’s board for more than five years.
Jessica Carrasquillo, manager of the Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s new Elmont branch, was named the Elmont Chamber of Commerce’s Businessperson of the Year. Carrasquillo became a member of the Elmont chamber three years ago, and now serves as a member of its board of directors. She is also a member of the Belmont Stakes Festival and Parade Committee and Elmont Franklin Square Rotary Club, and is actively involved in Gateway Youth Outreach, an after-school program in Elmont.
