Nassau police responded to a call of a man lying on the sidewalk in Elmont on July 11, and officers were allegedly attacked, police said.

At the intersection of Plainfield Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike at 6:42 p.m. that Tuesday, police found Franklin Square resident Joseph L. Gonsalves, 41, on the ground. When the officers tried to help Gonsalves, he allegedly “became combative, spitting in their face,” and hit an officer in his right cheek, according to police.

After being arrested, Gonsalves was taken to an area hospital by county police ambulance for treatment.

He is charged with assault and two counts of harassment. Gonsalves will be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on July 11.
