Man struck by vehicle on Hempstead Turnpike, badly injured

A 60-year-old man was seriously injured while crossing Hempstead Turnpike, near Scherer Boulevard, in Franklin Square on March 14, at 11:15 p.m., according to Nassau County's Homicide Squad.

According to detectives, the man was struck by a green sedan traveling eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike, and the driver of the vehicle fled the scene following the incident.

The victim was airlifted to the Nassau University Medical Center, and was treated for multiple internal injuries and injuries to his external extremities, police said.

This incident comes one month after a 72-year-old man from Jamaica, Queens, was struck and killed by a sport utility vehicle nearby, on Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont.

According to police, on Feb. 14, the man was crossing Hempstead Turnpike and was hit by a vehicle traveling west on the turnpike, near the intersection of Sterling Road. The driver stopped and called police after the incident, detectives said.

That victim suffered serious head trauma and a compound fracture of his right leg, and was transported to an area hospital by a Nassau County ambulance. He was pronounced dead on Feb. 15.
