Many happy returns for Seahawks

On a day when the rain was relentless, nobody was more slippery than Carey’s Greg D’Arienzo.

The do-it-all senior scored all five of the Seahawks’ touchdowns—two on interception returns, two on kickoff returns and one rushing—as they opened the Nassau Conference II football season with a soggy 32-14 victory over visiting Kennedy on Friday afternoon. The Cougars got long fourth-quarter touchdown runs from junior Joe Karo and senior Joseph Stagliano.

The Seahawks seized momentum late in the first quarter with their defense on the field and Kennedy in the red zone. D’Arienzo picked off a third-and-5 pass by Kennedy junior quarterback Adrian Rose and brought it back 90 yards for a touchdown, setting the tone for a wild game that featured six scoring plays of 58 yards or more.

“Greg was tremendous for us today and make big plays everywhere,” Carey coach Mike Stanley said. “It was a tough day to throw and we committed too many penalties, but we ran the ball well and played strong defense. They’ve got some quality backs. It’s never easy the first week because you don’t have a lot to go on.”

It wasn’t easy for the either offense, which didn’t produce a point until the fourth quarter. The Seahawks only scoring drive began late in the third when the Cougars turned the ball over on downs at the Carey 26. Junior quarterback Kyle Zahradka, sophomore tailback Rob Zorn and D’Arienzo then keyed an eight-play, 74-yard touchdown drive. D’Arienzo’s 19-yard run with 10:54 remaining made it 26-0.

Kennedy would score on each of its next two possessions. In between Karo’s 60-yard touchdown burst and a 66-yard jaunt by Stagliano, D’Arienzo wowed the crowd one last time with a 77-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. D’Arienzo brought back the opening kickoff of the second half 82 yards for an 18-0 lead.

“D’Arienzo’s a great player and he’s had big games before,” Kennedy coach Frank Sansanelli said. “Some of our mistakes gave him opportunities that we can’t give the next great player we see. Physically, we proved that we can play.”
