At the Elmont Memorial Library Board of Trustees’ Reorganization Meeting July 21, Joanne Mazzeo was named the board’s new president. Mazzeo, an Elmont resident for nearly 30 years, was first elected to the board in 2007 to fill the remaining three years of Brian Lynn’s vacated seat. She served that three-year term — two years as vice president — and ran again in 2010, winning a five-year term.

“I have a love for the library and the Elmont community,” Mazzeo said. “I was honored to have been elected board president by my fellow trustees. Their trusting my leadership abilities gives me a renewed purpose and the confidence to do what’s best for the library and community.”

Mazzeo, who lives in Elmont with her husband and two children, is a Hofstra University graduate and has experience working in financial services. She also serves as the third vice president of the Sewanhaka Central Council of Parent-Teacher Associations.

An avid library user, Mazzeo said that as president, she’ll work “to ensure sound fiscal management, fair and equitable treatment of our patrons, and compliance with board policies.”

Mazzeo said she hopes to see more of the public attend monthly board meetings. “I want and welcome input and suggestions from the community — our patrons!,” Mazzeo said. “(We) want to hear what you have to say, and if it makes sense and helps us move the library forward, then it’s a win-win for everyone.”
