Protecting residents from the cold

Warming centers opening in Franklin Square and Elmont

Two warming centers-- one in Franklin Square and one in Elmont-- will be open on Dec. 15 and 16 from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. to shelter people from the freezing temperatures.

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Anthony Santino was most concerned about residents who don't have full access to well heated and dry facilities.

"I invite neighbors who don't have enough heat to 'warm up' at one of the town's 16 warming centers," he said. "Freezing temperatures can be dangerous for everyone, especially seniors, who may have a hard time regulating their body temperature and staying warm."

The Elmont Senior Center at 138 Elmont Road, Elmont, and the Franklin Square Senior Center at 1182 Martha Place in Franklin Square are open both days for everyone seeking relief from the cold.

Santino gave some tips to residents on how to stay safe during the cold temperatures and inclement winter weather:

- It's important to wear a hat, dress in layers, stay hydrated and limited your exposure to the cold.

- Make sure you eat, which helps to keep your body warm.

- Keep moving, as exercise can generate body heat and keep you warm.

- Motorists should be sure to have an emergency kit in their vehicles, in the event they are stranded outdoors (kit should include blankets, medication, cell phone, emergency contact numbers, dry food such as trail mix or granola bars, a shovel and water).

In total, 16 warming centers will be open for Town of Hempstead residents, Santino said.

"We are eager to help our neighbors during this cold spell," he said. "Our 16 senior centers offer a place to escape the frigid temperatures and enjoy a warm place to relax and socialize with other neighbors."
