Retired Elmont superintendent returns in interim position

Al Harper has been announced as Elmont school district’s interim superintendent until a permanent superintendent is hired.

He previously served as the district’s superintendent for 16 years until his retirement in 2020. Throughout his tenure, he focused on preparing Elmont students for careers in the 21st century. He enhanced partnerships with academic institutions, local universities and museums, revitalized the district’s talent development program for students in grades third through sixth, and implemented the Model United Nations program for students in grades fourth through sixth.

Before his superintendent tenure, Harper worked as principal of Elmont Memorial High School in the Sewanhaka school district. He earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Howard University ad his master’s degree in special education from Adelphi University.
