Schools closed due to icy roads

All schools in the Franklin Square Union Free, Elmont Union Free and Sewanhaka Central High school districts are closed today, due to inclement weather conditions caused by freezing rain that fell on Long Island throughout Tuesday evening.

All activities scheduled today for the Elmont and Sewanhaka districts have been canceled. The Franklin Square Board of Education Work Session has been moved from 7:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and the CBAC Meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Both meetings will be held at the Polk Street School, at 960 Polk Ave. in Franklin Square.

According to the Nassau County Police, officers responded to 30 calls for auto accidents between the hours of 12 a.m. to 9 a.m. today. There were no reported serious injuries.

Drivers are advised to continue to use caution. Conditions are still considered to be hazardous due to icing.

For icy road conditions, you may contact the Town of Hempstead Highway Department at (516) 489-5000 during regular business hours. After hours, contact the Town of Hempstead Department of Public Safety at (516) 538-1900. All calls will be handled on a priority basis, and special consideration will be given to residents with a substantiated medical problem that requires medical attention.
