Seahawks must turn page quickly

Suffer blowout loss to VSC

If there was such a thing as a mercy rule in high school basketball, last Friday’s Conference AA-I game between Valley Stream Central and Carey wouldn’t have lasted the full four quarters.

The visiting Eagles dominated all aspects from the opening tip, never trailed, built an insurmountable 30-point halftime advantage and didn’t let off the gas even with their non-starters on the floor. The result was an 89-41 blowout that brought their first winning streak of the season.

“We’ve been practicing better and playing harder, and we’re starting to jell,” Central coach Hayward Alfred said. “I was really happy with the defensive effort. I scouted Carey and few times and we came in here expecting a tough game.”

Senior Jerry Mordi had a triple-double (17 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists), senior Marc Augustin scored a game-high 21 and ripped down 14 rebounds, and senior Reggie Dennis added 16 points and nine boards for the Eagles, who upped their record to 2-2 in conference play and 4-4 overall.

“This is just the second game we’ve been 100 percent healthy and using our desired rotation,” Alfred said. “I knew we weren’t as bad as we looked in some games early in the season. We still have room to improve. We’ve got to keep
working.”

In their previous game, the Seahawks (1-3, 1-6) played well for three quarters and led defending Nassau Class AA champion Uniondale on its home court by one before the Knights pulled away for a 63-46 victory. Carey coach Marty Kelly was disappointed none of the positives from the loss carried over two days later.

“We were bad all-around today and need to put this one behind us as quickly as possible,” Kelly said. “This is the first game we’ve played that wasn’t competitive. We got caught up in the tempo they wanted to play and they ran away from us.”

The Eagles led by eight after the opening quarter and could do no wrong in the second when they poured in 28 points, including the last 13, to take a 48-18 lead at halftime. Senior Julio Menzoza had eight of his 10 points in the second quarter, and Augustin had seven, Mordi six and Dennis five.
