Spooktacular hauntings invade Long Island's south shore

Places to get spooked – if you dare

There’s still more Halloween festivities awaiting folks who need another fix of those thrills and chills.

Fire Department Spooks
Ghosts, spirits and other creepy characters can haunt even firehouses. The Valley Stream Fire Department’s Haunted Firehouse is that kind of place. Come if you dare. It is a place to have fun, but it may make you run screaming into the night!
See what lurks behind the shadows, now-Oct. 31. It is open Friday and Saturday, 7-11 p.m.; Sunday, 6-10 p.m.; Monday, 6 p.m. Brooklyn Ave., Valley Stream. (516) 561-1777 or www.facebook.com/vsfdhauntedhouse.

House of Horrors
See what thousands of people witness every year. The Franklin Square Horror is considered one of America’s scariest home haunts. Donations benefit autism and cerebral palsy groups.
Venture into The Tomb of Darkness, the longest haunted walk-through ever created in Franklin Square with 250 feet of terror! See The Spider’s Lair, Vampire’s Den, Infestation Hallway and plenty more spooky surprises. The Chainsaw Wielding Maniac with his ghoulish companions will also be there, along with the horror house’s newest member, The Creeper, from the Jeepers Creepers movies.
Come for a scare, Saturday, Oct. 29, and Monday, Oct. 31, 7-11 p.m. 1148 Norbay St. Franklin Square. (516) 352-4250 or www.wix.com/JoeA65/Franklin-Square-Horror.

Haunted Walk
Oceanside resident Rick Cinetti builds a maze in his backyard every year. See what sort of monsters will greet you as you walk through the haunted maze. If you want to get to the candy on the other side of the backyard, you have to go through the maze. A $1 donation benefits local sports teams.
The maze will be open Friday, Oct. 28, also Sunday and Monday, Oct. 30-31, 7-9 p.m. 39 Davison Ave., in Oceanside (directly across the street from the Oceanside Library).

Haunted Mansion
College can be scary for many students. The CW Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville is extra-scary this time of year with the Music Department’s Haunted Mansion, featuring “Asylum Lockdown.” For something less scary, geared to ages 3-8 years, there’s a children’s room with face painting, story telling, games, and treats.
Created by college students, it’s open for visitors, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 28-29, 6-11 p.m. Admission: $7, $5 under 12. C.W. Post Fine Arts Center, 720 Northern Blvd., Brookville. (516) 299-2000, ext. 2474
