Stewar Manor students learn railroad safety

Students at Elmont’s Stewart Manor School learned about railroad safety during a Together Railroads and Communities Keeping Safe Assembly from the Long Island Railroad on Oct. 5.

Tara Savage, assistant principal, believed that railroad safety was an important lesson to teach students, given the school’s proximity to train tracks. Chrisann Fabio, a community relations specialist for the LIRR, led the assembly.

The students learned best practices when they are at a train station or near train tracks. The assembly’s lessons included basic concepts such as staying off the tracks, the dangers of the third rail, platform safety and railroad crossings. Fabio spoke to the children about more general train information like who the conductor and engineer are.

Students receive a copy of the book, “The Adventures of Safety Sam and Tracks the Dog.” Fabio introduced the students to the LIRR’s superhero Safety Sam.

The children will be able to participate in the railroad’s 2023-24 Safety Sticker Contest. To be considered for the contest, students can create a picture, slogan or both about safety around trains and tracks. The contest begins Oct. 15.
